We have all heard the cliché saying about age being just a number on the page. The question is, is there truth to that saying? Time moves fast and many of us want to pursue youthfulness and longevity. I always say that I want to live a long life. But what I am really saying is that I want to defy the limitations of age, I want to live a youthful life longer. Can we embrace youthfulness and vitality regardless of our chronological age?
What is Youthfulness?
Youthfulness is a state of mind. It is the ability to stay fresh, be optimistic, and have a zest for life. What characteristics do you think of when you think of someone younger (besides smooth skin, few wrinkles, and endless energy)? They are curious, have a sense of wonder and excitement, and a thirst for knowledge.
The Power of the Mind
Mindset about age is vital. You have heard sayings such as “You are too old to do that.” “I could never do that anymore.” Or “I am too old.” These sayings do not give permission for a person to live a youthful life. These sayings support a fixed mindset about age and the number on the page. That certain number will dictate a decline in one’s life.
The growth mindset sees opportunity and possibilities. Sayings such as “I can accomplish that.” “I want to try or learn something new.” Or “I am not worried about what others will think or say when I try and/or fail at something new.” Sayings like these allow people to live according to their desires, and not let the number of candles on their birthday cake limit them.
Lifelong Learning
Aging can be an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Lifelong learning keeps our minds sharp and expands our perspectives. Each new experience adds richness to our lives and keeps us feeling young at heart. Think of all the new experiences and zest for learning that is evident in young children. These traits can continue to help us life a youthful life longer. A few examples are:
-Pick up a new hobby
-Participate in a new sport
-Learn a new language
-Explore different cultures
-Learn to draw, dance, sew, cook, woodwork, garden, etc.
-Experience new adventures
-Volunteer at a school to nurture young readers
Let’s dare to be youthful, to live a youthful life longer. Living with purpose and passion gives meaning to our lives and can help fuel that vitality. When we live with intention and enthusiasm, age becomes irrelevant.
