Single Most Important Habit to Develop

What is the single most important habit to develop? I am not talking about weight loss or creating the perfect body. But I am talking about something that our bodies are designed to do. We are designed to move. So, the single most important habit to develop is to exercise.

Exercise

Regular exercise offers many benefits for both physical and mental health.  It can help with weight management, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, improve sleep and brain health.

The Mayo Clinic recommends for us to get a least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week.  That is 30 minutes of activity 5 days a week.  That means we can experience all the benefits just by taking a 30-minute walk in the morning or after dinner. Even shorter amounts of physical activity can be helpful. Being active for short periods during the day can add up and have health benefits as well. Take a 15-minute walk in the morning and then another one after dinner.

Benefits of Exercise

Exercise is the most effective and most important thing we can do for ourselves. Here is a partial list of reasons why this is true.

Weight Training

When we think of movement, we need to also think about strength training exercises. The health benefits include increase muscle mass and strength, improve bone density, better balance and coordination.  Work on all the major muscle groups at least 2 times a week. The major muscle groups include:

  • Chest
  • Back
  • Shoulders
  • Lags
  • Arms
  • Core
