One Weightlifting Exercise Can Provide 4 Different Results

Bulgarian split squats is an exercise that works the quads, glutes and hamstrings.  Since it is a unilateral exercise, it also improves balance and stability. It is very versatile.  It is a good example that one weightlifting exercise can provide 4 different results.

The squat involves elevating one foot on a bench or cube behind you while performing a squat with the front leg. This set up forces the front leg to work harder to control the movement.  This lower body strength exercise can be modified for different fitness level and different training outcomes: speed, power, strength, and stability.

Good to Remember

Remember the basics before weightlifting. Prioritize correct form to maximize effectiveness and minimize injury risk. Always perform dynamic warm-up exercises and start with lower weights then gradually progress to more challenging weights.

4 Results

Here is how you can change the Bulgarian split squat for each of these goals:

Speed– Emphasize the lifting phase of the exercise to improve explosive movement. Perform the upward movement quickly and powerfully, explode upwards into a jump at the top of the rep.

Power– Focus on both lowering phase and the lifting phase in a controlled manner with a smooth transition between phases.

Strength– Use weights to increase overall lower body strength my maintaining a controlled tempo throughout the movement. Use weights that are challenging to the legs.

Stability– Improve balance, coordination and strength. Use one weight in one hand to stabilize muscles in the hips, knees, and ankles. Maintain balance throughout the entire motion. Perform on both sides.

Variations

Bulgarian split squats can also be performed with kettlebells, resistance bands, and while holding an exercise ball. Remember, it’s essential to prioritize proper form to minimize injury risk and maximize the benefits of the exercise. Form is more important than the amount of weight lifted, or the number of repetitions performed.

Bulgarian split squats is a versatile exercise and is a good example that one weightlifting exercise can provide 4 different results.
