I have heard the saying many times that fitness is 90% mental and 10% physical. Someone who is mentally strong has the willpower to persevere and endure physically. So, it seems we need to be mentally strong so we can be physically strong.
Some people struggle to maintain a fitness routine because of self-doubt, and their fixed mindset. Our mental aspect is crucial for success. Even top athletes attribute their success to mental focus. This means that while physical ability it important, the majority of achieving fitness goals relies on mental toughness. Mental toughness includes motivation, discipline, and the will power to push through challenges.
Our bodies reflect our lifestyle. It also reflects our thoughts and mindset about our abilities. Our self-talk is the key to our present and future. Saying “I will try” has such a different feeling than saying “I will”. When we “try” there is an option to back out or not do it. When we say we will do something, then we will. It does not have to be perfect. We hold ourselves accountable to get it done.
Mental Aspects
Reaching fitness goals requires more than the physical act of exercising. The mind must be convinced of the work. It requires mental characteristics such as:
- Being committed to the time and journey
- Staying consistent
- Overcoming discomfort
- Managing negative self-talk
- Setting realistic goals
Physical Aspects
The body can withstand what we ask it to do. It is not easy, but usually worth the work. The body needs:
- Strength
- Endurance
- Flexibility
We become the person our self-talk tells us to become. This is a self-fulfilling prophecy; it predetermines our outcomes. Our mindset sets the foundation for who we are as a person, it sets the tone for our healthy lifestyle. Since out mindset paves the way for our future, we need to be mentally strong so we can be physically strong.
