The F Word We Do Not Say Out Loud

FAT! That is the word I am referring to. (The other F word is said WAY TOO MUCH.)  Fat has gotten a bad rap at times.  It has become the F word we do not say out loud.

Fat is good for us. Fat is bad for us.  Like many things in life there should be moderation in everything, even when it comes to fat!  Our bodies do need fat to help sustain us.  When we focus too much on cutting out all fat, we can deprive our bodies of what it needs.

I do not want to make this a science lesson about all the details of fat.  That would include information about bad fats such as saturated and trans fats, and good fats which include monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats as well as Omega 3 fats. If you want details this article, Good Fats, Bad Fats, and Heart Disease, is one good resource.

For our purposes, here is a quick guide to understanding the pros and cons of fats and navigating healthy choices.

When fat is good for us:

  • Helps our brain to function
  • Gives our body energy
  • Protects our organs
  • Supports cell growth

Good sources of fat:

  • Nuts, Seeds
  • EVOO (extra virgin olive oil)
  • Avocado
  • Coconut oil
  • Fatty fish (salmon, tuna, etc.)

When fat is not good for us:

  • Can raise cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Increase the risk of heart disease

Bad sources of fat:

  • Processed foods
  • Fast foods
  • Fried foods

Some people never eat the items listed under the good or bad sources of fat while others eat them readily or in moderation.  The choice is up to us.  it is important to know what the foods we choose to eat are doing for our bodies.  Since good fat does have so many good qualities for us, it does not have to become the F word we do not say out loud.
