What’s Wrong with being Comfortable?

Nothing, absolutely nothing! There is plenty of research to support the value of relaxing, being comfortable, and relieving stress. When I ask what’s wrong with being comfortable, maybe I am really asking about complacency.

Complacency is being satisfied and at the same time being unaware of dangers or deficiencies.  So, what is wrong with being complacent?

How would you answer that?  What comes to mind is the thinking that life does not stay the same.  Everything is always changing.  So, since life does not stay the same, if we are not working at improving or “getting better”, then that is the concern.  We need to work at improving to keep up with all the changes…continuous improvement relates to personal life as well as it does in business life. Deciding which improvement areas are needed allows one to refocus on what is important for the long haul in life.

Example

I know a gal that has gone through some medical issues.  Now that she is on the road to recovery, her doctor is encouraging her to get up, move, walk, and be active.  She has gotten so used to sitting all day that she now continues this practice. She is complacent with the fact that resting helped her heal but now not being active is a detriment to her long-term health.

The Approach

There are 3 main principals to keep in mind when thinking about an approach for refocusing and improvement.  The three principals are to keep it:

  • Predictable-Create patterns, every time “A” happens (a task, event, etc.) “B” will automatically follow (during each commercial break, she will get up and walk around the house).
  • Repeatable-Develop a routine that can be done or completed over and over (since TV is part of her daily life, she will walk during commercials daily).
  • Manageable-Implement simple, easy steps (walking around the house turns into walking around the block, walking 1 mile, etc.)

What’s wrong with being comfortable? Nothing!  It is complacency that is worrisome.  We get so comfortable or satisfied with certain routines that we don’t see the deficiencies they can cause in life.  Since life is every changing, we too should be every changing.
