5 Simple Ways to Maintain Your Fitness Goals

We have all heard of SMART goals.  It is an acronym used to establish criteria for effective goal setting and development.  This framework is used in many industries including education, project management, fitness, and personal development.  It is the first of the 5 simple ways to maintain your fitness goals.

SMART Goals

SMART Goals acronym helps to create concise goals and action steps that are attainable within a certain time frame.  Defining these parameters can help to increase the chances of achieving the goal.

SMART Goal with example:

            Specific-I will complete circuit training

            Measurable-2 times a week

            Achievable-3 circuit rotations each session

Relevant-So I can improve my muscle strength

Time Bound-by the end of 2024

The Other 4 Ways

Developing your own SMART goal like the above example is the first step in maintaining your fitness goals.  The other four simple ways are to:

  • Find fitness activities that are right for you, that you look forward to (Pair the activity with a friend or a favorite auto book or podcast).
  • Develop a schedule and add it to your calendar (enter the time on your calendar just like any other important appointment).
  • Enjoy the time and the fitness activities (have fun, enjoy this time set aside for yourself).
  • Give yourself some grace, stay positive as you maintain your fitness goals (we all falter and have setbacks, that is part of the process. Get up and start again).

Circuit Example

When doing a circuit session, it is common to do the circuit more than one time.  As an example, complete 3 rounds of the given circuit. Rest as needed between each exercise and circuit. Exercises should not be done as fast as possible. Concentrate on the correct form and posture. Increase the amount of weight as needed. Do 10-12 of each exercise.
