What Does Success Look Like for You?

What does success look like for you?  When I talk with others, everyone has their own definition of success for their day, week, month or year. One definition of success is an accomplishment of an aim or purpose, the attainment of a goal.

Here are some of the practical everyday examples that were shared with me:

  • survive the day
  • dinner on the table
  • time with family
  • date night
  • family vacation
  • position or status in career
  • work on health goals (eating, moving, mindset)
  • walk or run around the block

What would you add to the list?  As you contemplate what success looks like for you, the key is to define your why, the why behind what you want to achieve. Focusing on the why helps to clarify your goals and desired successes.  Defining your why can also reveal current obstacles. Knowing these can help you then overcome what might be hindering your progress.

Here are some questions to help clarify your why.

What…

  • Needs to happen?
  • Steps do I need to take?
  • Is my timeframe?
  • Feelings do I want to have?
  • Will it look like once I achieve it?

Here is an example:

My goal is to have dinner on the table each evening.  Life and events get in the way, but I continue to push toward my goal.  The hard work and distractions are worth it to me because my why behind dinner on the table is family time.  During the week, dinner is the only time our family gets to connect and that is a priority for us.

As you dig deep to answer what does success look like for you, remember that being crystal clear on the why behind what you want to attain will help you to achieve your goals.
