Ideas on How to Break Through Your Limiting Beliefs

I have taken a casual poll and asked several people what are some of their biggest blocks to their health and fitness goals.  Based on what I am hearing, we will explore ideas on how to break through our limiting beliefs.  Their response is often followed up with a statement such as they want to either give up or try harder.  Some of their responses I hear are:

  • Fear of failing
  • Procrastination
  • Lack of direction
  • Self-talk and mindset
  • Low energy, motivation

Trying Harder

Reaching our goals will not happen by doing the same thing repetitively but just working harder at it.  I think of one of Albert Einstein’s quotes. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

It is like that fly trying to get out of the car window.  It keeps buzzing the same closed window trying to escape. He does not see that the back window is down, and we are trying to swat it out.  The fly does not look for a different solution. He just keeps buzzing the same window.

Trying harder is not necessarily the solution.  What if we could take a different direction, do something different, an alternative approach, or think outside of the box.

Invest in New Strategies

When our current beliefs and strategies are not working, we can adapt and invest in new strategies.  There are many different strategies to consider.  Some might include:

  • Consistency and determination-set a clear direction, create a plan, and schedule action steps on the calendar.
  • Face emotions that hold us back-first identify the emotions and create positive affirmations to read when you feel that emotion.  “I am capable of taking on new challenges.”
  • Let go of self-doubt and judgement-limiting beliefs lose their power as we consider that they may not be true. Our thoughts can influence our actions.  Embrace the opportunity to learn and evolve.
  • Limit frustration and impatience-be kind, give yourself grace.  You can find the strength to grow and change. You will not be perfect the first time.
  • Protect your energy by creating healthy boundaries-my well-being is important; it is ok to take time for myself and make my goals a priority.
  • Surround ourselves with positive influences-choose who you spend time with.  Do they support you and your goals? Do they have similar beliefs?

What other ideas on how to break through our limiting beliefs have worked for you?  How has your support system helped you move forward?  What other new strategies can we implement in place of giving up or doing the same thing repetitively?
