Focus on Sustainable Behaviors vs. the Number on the Scale

There has been an increasing emphasis on health and wellness over the years.  Some interpret this interest only as weight management.  While maintaining a healthy weight is important for overall health, it is necessary to focus on sustainable behaviors vs. the number on the scale.

One of the main problems with a focus on weight is that it can lead to unhealthy behaviors.  People can turn to extreme diets or exercise regimens in an effort to lose weight quickly. These behaviors can be harmful to both physical and mental health and are unlikely to lead to sustainable weight loss.  In addition, we have no control over the number that shows up on the scale.

A better approach is to focus on sustainable behaviors that promote health and wellness.  This can include engaging in regular physical activity, eating healthy, and getting enough sleep.  Focusing on behaviors rather than weight can help to shift the focus to a healthy lifestyle instead of short-term extreme actions. We do have control over the behaviors in which we choose to engage.

We have all heard of methods people use to lose weight quickly.  Run 5 miles every day, eat chicken and veggies 3 times a day for a month, go on the cabbage soup diet, etc. There are many others that can be added to the list.  These behaviors are not sustainable. They are used for a short period of time. 

The key is to focus on sustainable behaviors that can last a lifetime.  Here are some examples.

Non-Sustainable Quick Fixes

Run 5 miles every day
Eat chicken and veggies every meal

Cabbage soup diet

Sustainable Lifestyle Choices

Exercise and be active daily
Eat a variety of nutritious whole foods including proteins, carbs, and fats
Mindset of lifestyle vs. diets

Sustainable behaviors are an important aspect of health and wellness. Quick fixes are not viable.  For overall health, it is necessary to focus on sustainable behaviors vs. the number on the scale.
