Salad dressing is considered a condiment. It is a way to personalize your salad based on your tastes and preferences. It can enhance and alter the flavor of salads. There are numerous brands and flavors on the shelves in grocery stores. Or, if you want to improve your health and nutrition, salad dressing is one way to accomplish that. It is as easy as make your own salad dressing.
Salad Dressing
Recently I was reading some information about making healthy food choices. I was surprised at one of the suggestions. The comment was to eat more salads with the dressing on the side so you can control the amount of dressing that you eat. That is an ok suggestion but the part I was surprised about is that the information not once mentioned the type of dressing to eat.
Take a minute and look at the ingredients in the salad dressings on the shelves. Many of them have canola oil, soy oil or another highly process vegetable oil in them. These oils are part of the hateful 8 seeds oils that we should avoid according to Dr. Cate. She has done extensive research on seed oils and is sharing her information on how harmful they are to our health. In addition to the seed oil, some dressings have several ingredients that I do not know how to pronounce and do not care to consume.
Make Your Own
It is ok to eat that salad, but the trick is to use homemade salad dressing. They are easy and fast to make. Here is one recipe I use. This one contains no harmful seed oils or extra unrecognizable ingredients.
½ cup olive oil
1/3 c lemon juice
½ t Dijon mustard
1 t honey or maple syrup
1 t salt
¼ t pepper
¼ t dried oregano
½ t garlic powder
¼ t onion powder
¼ t garlic salt
I use a salad dressing shake bottle that I bought on Amazon. It has a metal ball in the bottom that helps to blend all the ingredients. When my bottle gets low, I add more so I am ready for the next meal. Healthy eating can be as easy as make your own salad dressing.
