Strong Legs Equal A Strong Heart

Legs provide the support for our bodies.  The healthier the legs…the healthier the body. Training them should be a top priority. Strong legs are not only for mobility, physical appearance, and health, but it can be argued that strong legs equal a strong heart. 

Strong Heart

What makes a strong heart?  One of the components that make a heart strong is regular physical activity.  Movement strengthens your heart muscle and improves its ability to pump blood. Adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. Aerobic exercise and resistance training are the most important types of exercise for heart health.  Any type of movement that makes your heart work harder than usual (like brisk walking, dancing, or cycling) will benefit your heart health.

Strong Legs

Leg strength training not only builds muscle in the lower body but also enhances performance, improves overall body composition, supports joint health, and contributes to better functional strength and mobility. All these items enhance body health.  

Strength training for legs is important because it

  • engages large muscle groups
  • supports daily functional movements
  • reduces injury risk
  • enhances balance and stability
  • contributes to better core strength

Building strength also has a positive impact on blood pressure and cholesterol. These overall benefits to your heart are another reason that strong legs contribute to a strong heart.  Studies have shown a strong correlation between leg muscle strength and a reduced risk of developing heart failure.

There are so many benefits of having strong legs.  Not only do they help in daily functional activities like climbing stairs, carrying groceries, and sitting down in a chair, strong legs and the movement they provide contributes to making our hearts stronger. All the work we do to strengthen our legs supports the statement that strong legs equal a strong heart.
