A healthy trip to the grocery store

What you choose to eat is an important aspect of your health. Elite body builders say that a 6 pack is developed in the kitchen.  You can create the perfect training plan, hire the right coach, and buy all the trendy workout clothes, but nothing beats a healthy trip to the grocery store.  If your nutrition is off base, then you will not achieve the results you are desiring. 

Food and what you choose to eat does not have to be complicated.  Everyone can benefit from the US dietary recommendations. You cannot go wrong when you eat vegetables, fruits, lean protein and complex carbs. 

A healthy trip to the grocery store consists of shopping around the exterior of the store.  That is where you will find most of the fresh foods.  The isles in the middle provide some natural foods like beans, quinoa and other complex carbs.  The majority of the isles however are filled with processes foods.

Here are some healthy foods to add to your grocery list:


  • Mixed greens
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Broccoli, cauliflower
  • Spinach, kale


  • Berries
  • Cherries
  • Apples
  • Bananas

Complex Carbs

  • Brown rice
  • Rolled oats
  • Quinoa

Lean Protein

  • Eggs
  • Low fat, plain Greek yogurt
  • Black beans
  • Chicken breast
  • Salmon

Be sure and make a stop in the spice isle.  Herbs and spices are a great way to add flavor, color, and fragrance to your food without adding extra fat, sugar, or salt.  They also provide powerful antioxidants and have a variety of health benefits.  Some herbs and spices can be used fresh or dried.  (parsley, rosemary, basil, dill, etc.)


If you buy healthy food, and have these healthy choices available at home, then that is what we will eat.  If you fail to make healthy choices at the grocery store, then you will most likely not make healthy choices at home.
